Doug Nelson was a wrestler in high school and at Cumberland College, where he graduated in 1983 as a data processing major. He started playing judo in college. Nelson won bronze medals as a heavyweight at the 1983 and 1987 Pan American Games. Nelson won the 1983 National Sports Festival title and won a silver medal at the 1983 Pacific Rim Championship. He also won a bronze medal in 1983 at the Belgium Open.
