Biography

Martti Ketelä’s biggest accomplishment as a modern pentathlete was probably winning a surprising bronze medal in the team event at the 1972 Olympics. Besides his two Olympic appearances in 1968 and 1972, Ketelä also competed at the 1967, 1969-70 and 1973 World Championships, but did not medal in those competitions, his best individual place being 14th in 1973. Domestically, Ketelä never won a Finnish modern pentathlon title, but won silvers in 1967-68 and a bronze in 1972. Ketelä was also Finnish individual épée champion in 1967 and won the Finnish team épée title six times (1968, 1972, 1976, 1979, 1981 and 1982).
