Biography

Michael Lumsden was the son of lieutenant-general Herbert Lumsden, one of the most senior Army officers killed during enemy action in World War II. Like his father, Michael also served with the 17th Royal Lancers, and also like his father, was a keen horseman, although his father specialised in National Hunt racing, and competed in the Aintree Grand National on several occasions. Michael was runner-up in the 1948 British Modern Pentathlon Championships at Camberley, before going on to represent Great Britain in the individual event at the London Olympics. After the first phase, the 5000 metre cross country ride, he was lying in third place after scoring a maximum 100 points. At the end of the five events he was placed 34th out of 45 starters. His brother Peter was a racing driver, well known for competing in endurance races like the Le Mans 24 Hours.
