Danny Nightingale, a 22-year-old engineering student at the University of Sussex, was the youngest member of the team which won the Olympic team gold meals in 1976. In the individual event, Nightingale finished in 10th place. He made a second Olympic appearance in 1980 when, as captain of the team he finished 15th individually. He was the British champion in 1976, 1977, and 1978 and in 1979 became the only westerner ever to win the Spartakiad. Danny Nightingale later served as the Development Officer for the Modern Pentathlon Association.
