Besides his Olympic gold medal, Aleksandr Tarasov was the world team champion from 1957-59. He also won individual silver in 1957 and individual bronzes in 1958 and 1959 at the World Championships. In 1958, Tarasov won his only Soviet title. After finishing his sporting career, Tarasov worked as a modern pentathlon coach in his hometown of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg).
