George Bare was an officer in the US Army when he competed in the 1924 modern pentathlon. Bare graduated from the US Military Academy in 1920. He became a career officer, retiring as a colonel. During World War II he was given the Legion of Merit for meritorious conduct while stationed in Italy from 1944-46. Although he died in Tacoma, Washington in 1981, Bare was buried at West Point.
