James Haley studied at the University of North Florida, where he was on the swim team. He was also ranked in the US top 10 in fencing and combined those talents to compete in the modern pentathlon at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Haley competed in triathlons on the side.
After college Haley studied at the Northwestern Health Sciences University, earning a degree in chiropractic medicine. Haley then practiced chiropractic in Lake City, Florida. He is a member of the Florida Chiropractic Association, the American Chiropractic Association, and the World Olympians Association and has served as the Vice-President of Florida Chiropractic Association Sports Counsel.
