A member of the Toronto Argonaut Rowing Club, Norway Jackes had one of his earliest successes at Canada’s Henley Royal Regatta in 1905, when he was a member of the victorious junior eights crew. He competed in the coxless pairs event at the 1908 Summer Olympics, alongside Frederick Toms, and was defeated in the semi-finals by the Leander Club duo from Great Britain that would go on to win the gold medal. As there were only four crews in the tournament, however, Jackes and Toms (as well as the German team that lost their semi-final race) are considered bronze medalists. The following year, Jackes was named vice-captain of the Argonauts’ rowing team (under captain Phil Boyd) and continued to compete for several years, finding success at numerous Canadian and American regattas. He later served with the Royal Canadian Army during World War I and was wounded twice while fighting overseas. By career he was a reporter with the Toronto Telegram, which was founded by his uncle, John Ross Robertson.
