One of three brothers, Heikki Laine rowed at the 1960 Roma Olympics along with his two siblings. In the coxless four the Finnish quartet comprised of Heikki, his brothers Eero and Pertti, and compatriot Arto Nikulainen. The Finnish crew, however, were last in their heat and did not start in the repêchages. In Finland Heikki was a two-time champion in the coxless fours, winning in 1958 and 1960. Away from rowing Heikki worked as a firefighter.
