Robert Collins attended St. Peter’s College, Radley, before going to Oxford, where he read modern history at Trinity College. He competed in the 1948 Boat Race trials, and that year competed in the coxed fours at the London Olympics. Collins was a member of the Oxford Trinity eight that won the Headship of the River Eights for the record fifth consecutive time in 1948, and the following year was in the crew that won it for a sixth time.
