Biography

Having missed out when the Weybridge boat was beaten by Thames RC in the Olympic trial to see who should represent Great Britain in the eights at the 1924 Paris Olympics, Bernard Croucher was chosen for the coxed fours, along with fellow Weybridge men Harry Barnsley, John Townend, Thomas Monk, and Vince Boveington. Despite not medalling in Paris, the same crew did win the National Amateur Rowing Association (NARA) Senior Fours at the Walton-on-Thames Regatta a couple of weeks later.

An aircraft fitter by trade, Croucher was at home rowing eights, fours or sculling. One of his notable eights victories was in being a member of the Weybridge crew that won the 1928 Lord Desborough Challenge Cup at Putney. Croucher’s most notable sculling success was in winning the 1930 NARA Long-distance Double Sculls Championship of the Thames for the Beck Cup. With Weybridge team-mate F. J. Rosewell, they covered the eight-mile course in 56 minutes, beating the old record by six and a half minutes. Croucher later Served on the committee of the Weybridge club, and continued competing at the Weybridge Regatta beyond the age of 40.
