Biography

Ian Elliott went to Canford School where he was Captain of Boats. Upon going to Keble College, Oxford, he went straight into the college first VIII, and in 1959 Elliott rowed with the Oxford Boat Race reserve crew Isis that visited Japan. The following year he won his rowing Blue, adding a second Boat Race appearance 1961.

In 1960, along with the Oxford University Boat Club (OUBC) president David Rutherford, Elliott beat Richard Nicholson and Clive Marshall of Nottingham in the Silver Goblets at Henley. They had won the Oxford University pairs together the previous year. Also in 1960, Elliott was a member of the Oxford crew that made up the Great Britain eight at the 1960 Roma Olympics. They failed to make the final, however, after finishing second in their repêchage heat. Elliott succeeded Rutherford as OUBC president and in 1963 Elliott married Elizabeth Beresford, daughter of the Olympic sculler Jack Beresford at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London.
