Graham Fisk was the son of Sir Ernest Fisk, a radio industry pioneer in Australia who worked for both Marconi and the EMI music empire, of whom he was managing director and chief executive between 1945-51.
Graham was educated at Geelong Grammar School in Australia before going to Oriel College Oxford. Geelong a had record of producing finer rowers and Fisk was no exception and was a three-time rowing Blue 1948-50. When he was bow to the Oxford team in 1948, the number five for Cambridge was another Geelong old boy Brian Harrison. It was the first time two Geelong students opposed each other in the same Boat Race, although it has subsequently happened on other occasions. In 1952 Fisk competed at the Helsinki Olympics and finished fourth with the British coxed fours.
Fisk was a medical practitioner and met English-born Flora Maclachlan at a Manhattan Hospital in the USA where she was a nurse and he was a medical student. They married in 1955 and a few months later he returned to Australia, where they set up home and Fisk continued to practice as a doctor.
