Philip Fleming, who was educated at Eton and Magdalen College, Oxford, made only one appearance in the University Boat Race when he rowed at number sent in the winning Oxford boat of 1910. At Stockholm in 1912 he stroked the Leander eight which beat the crew from New College, Oxford by one length in the Olympic final. During the war Fleming served as a subaltern with the Queen’s Own Oxfordshire Hussars where one of his fellow officers was Winston Churchill. He was one of the founders of the merchant bank that bears his name and he held numerous directorships, many of which he only relinquished shortly before his death. He married, Jean, the daughter of Philip Hunloke, the 1908 Olympic yachting bronze medalist, and they were a prominent couple in Oxfordshire society. Philip Fleming often rode with the Bicester and the Heythrop Hunts and after serving as Deputy Lieutenant he was appointed High Sheriff of the County in 1948. Fleming’s brother Valentine, was a Conservative MP for Henley, and was the father of the James Bond creator Ian Fleming.
