Biography

Harold Lane started rowing at Edinburgh’s Portobello Rowing Club, and in 1914 won a junior Scottish title. A business opportunity saw him move south to London in 1920 and he joined the London Scottish Rugby Club, and also the Thames Rowing Club. In his first full season with Thames, Lane won seven trophies at various regattas in double sculls, fours and eights.

Lane made his Henley début in Thames’ coxless fours in the Wyfold Challenge Cup in 1921. However, his finest period came between 1925-28 when he won the Grand Challenge Cup three times (1925, 1927-28), Stewards’ Challenge Cup twice (1926-27), and the Wyfold in 1925. The Thames eight also represented Great Britain at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics where they won the silver medal. By profession, Lane worked for a manufacturing chemist.
