Biography

William Leckie was educated at Edinburgh Academy before going to Brasenose College, Oxford where, in 1948, he was a member of the Oxford crew that competed in the coxed fours at the London Olympics. The following year, he became a rowing Blue, when he rowed at No.3 in the closest Boat Race since the 1877 dead-heat. After the race, Leckie collapsed onto the clubhouse floor suffering from exhaustion. In 1950, he suffered a near-fatal accident when he was rescued from the top floor flat at Brasenose Old Lodge, Oxford, when he was trapped in his room after a fire broke out. After the War, Leckie saw National Service with the Royal Army Medical Corps.
