Colonel Alexander Lindsay served in the Army with the 17th/21st Lancers. He was the grandson of Alexander Lindsay, the 27th Earl of Crawford & Balcarres, and his father James was a Member of Parliament for North Devon. His mother was the daughter of the 8th Baron Howard De Walden.
Alexander Lindsay was educated at Eton where he learned to row and was in the college first VIII in 1955. He continued to row after going to Magdalen College, Oxford, where he studied engineering. Lindsay became a double rowing Blue at Oxford and was on the winning crew in both 1959 and 1960. Lindsay was a member of the Oxford crew that made up the Great Britain eight at the 1960 Roma Olympics. Unfortunately, they failed to make the final after finishing second in their repêchage heat.
During his two years National Service in the Army, all-round sportsman Lindsay represented his regiment at cross-country running, boxing, and shooting. At the age of 59 Lindsay rowed for Oxford in the Veteran’s Boat Race on the River Thames. He was the oldest competitor in the race.
