Biography

McAllister Lonnon started rowing during his time at Westminster school, and continued after going to Cambridge, when he rowed for Third Trinity. He was a three-time Blue and was on the winning side in 1935 and 1936. However, he was also a member of the crew that lost in 1937 when Oxford had their first win in 14 years, and thus ended Cambridge’s record-breaking run. Also in 1937, Lonnon was re-elected president of the Cambridge University Boat Club (CUBC) and became only the fourth man to hold the post in successive years. He also served the CUBC as secretary.

Lonnon first rowed at Henley for Westminster School in 1934, and in 1936 was in the Leander eight beaten in the final of the Grand Challenge Cup by Ruder Club, Zürich. During World War II he served with the Royal Engineers, and reached the rank of major.
