Donald Shaw attended Shrewsbury School and was in their boat that won the 1955 Princess Elizabeth Cup at Henley. After Shrewsbury, Shaw went to Keble Oxford, Oxford, and was a member of the Oxford eight that won the 1959 Boat Race. Shaw then followed that by rowing for Isis (the reserve Oxford boat) in the Grand Challenge Cup at Henley and they reached the semi-final before losing to Harvard University by half-a-length.
Shaw was in the Oxford eight that lost to Molesey Boat Club in the Grand Challenge Cup final at Henley in 1960 and that year was also a member of the Oxford crew that made up the Great Britain eight at the Roma Olympics. They failed to make the final, however, after finishing second in their repêchage heat.
