Having won the double sculls with K. E. Hyatt at the Kingston Regatta in 1921, Harold West teamed up with Karl Vernon the following year, and went all the way to the final of the Silver Goblets at Henley, only to lost to the Magdalen College (Oxford) pair of Guy Nickalls and Richard Lucas. West, and Thames Rowing Club team-mate Harold Lane, won the 1923 Marlow Pairs Challenge Cup, and the following year won the coveted Champion Pairs title at the Metropolitan Regatta at Putney, with Vernon as his team-mate once more,
At Henley, West rowed in pairs, fours and eights, and one of the finest moments in his career came in 1927 when he was bow to the Thames eight that won the Grand Challenge Cup at Henley. The crew repeated the performance in 1928, when they were selected to represented Great Britain at the Amsterdam Olympics, returning home with the silver medal.
