East German rower Ute Steindorf won the gold medal at the 1980 Moskva Olympics with Cornelia Klier in the coxless pairs. Both were substitutes at the 1976 Montréal Games, but did not compete. In 1977, the pair won the World Championships with the eights, and in 1978 and 1979 in the coxless pairs. In 1982, Steindorf won a bronze medal with the eights at the Worlds.
Steindorf studied sports and became a graduated sports teacher. After German re-unification, she worked as a rowing coach and later as a remedial teacher at a residential home for mentally disabled in Hallo on Saale.
