Wolfgang Güldenpfennig started his rowing career with the double sculls but moved to the single sculls in 1972. He then won the bronze medal at the München Summer Games. Three years later he moved to the quadruple sculls and claimed gold medals at both the 1975 and the 1976 Worlds, and also at the 1976 Montréal Games. Güldenpfennig later became a graduate sports teacher and coached at his home club SC Magdeburg and at the Regional Olympic Center of Saxony Anhalt.
