Rower Gabriele Mehl was a member of the West German coxed eights at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, finishing seventh as the only crew not reaching the final. Four years later at Barcelona, she won the bronze medal with the coxless fours. At World Championships, Mehl won the silver medal in 1990, and bronze in 1991.
At the German nationals, Mehl won the coxless fours title in four successive years from 1990-93. In 1993 and 1994 she added two more titles, in the coxless pairs with Birte Siech. Mehl was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award.
