Coxswain Dieter Arend was a gold medal winner in the coxed pairs at the 1936 Berlin Olympics along with Herbert Adamski and Gerhard Gustmann. From 1936-39 Gustmann and Adamski were the German Champions, with Arend as cox in 1936, and from 1937 with non-Olympian Günter Holstein taking over as cox. In 1943-44 Arend was the German Champion with the coxed fours.
