Joachim Ehrig won a bronze medal with the coxless fours at the 1972 München Olympics, and was subsequently awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, the highest sports award in Germany. Ehrig was also among the crews that won the silver medal at the 1970 World Championships, and a bronze medal at the 1971 Europeans. He also won three West German national titles.
Ehrig later turned to coaching, starting at ETUF Essen, his home club. He then worked worldwide, as an employee of the NOC of West Germany. Among other activities, he built up a rowing training center in China, and was chief coach to local Chinese rowers. He graduated as a sports and biology teacher.
