Peter Funnekötter won a bronze medal with the coxless fours at the 1972 München Olympics., and was subsequently awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, the highest sports award in Germany. Funnekötter was also among the crews that won the silver medal at the 1970 World Championships, and a bronze medal at the 1971 Europeans. He also won the West German eights title in 1973.
