Rower Michael Gentsch finished fourth with the West German quadruple sculls at the 1976 Montréal Olympics. The same year the boat won the West German nationals. In 1973 and 1977-78, Gentsch also won silver medals in this event.
Gentsch later studied politics, political economy, and American studies, before becoming a politician. After re-unification, he became government spokesman of Saxony-Anhalt. He was also engaged in the OK for the Berlin hosting process of the 2000 Olympics. Later, he was managing director of a social initiative in the German beverage industry for 12 years, and then became an independent business consultant. In 2009 he was briefly named sports director of the German Rowing Association.
