West German rower Oliver Grüner was a member of the quadruple sculls at the 1988 Seoul Olympics that finished sixth in the final. In 1988 and 1990 he won the German quadruple sculls national title and, in 1989 and 1991, also won the double sculls national titles. Together with André Steiner he won the double sculls bronze medal at the 1991 World Championships.
