Rowers Albert Hedderich, Michael Dürsch, Raimund Hörmann and Dieter Wiedenmann won the quadruple sculls gold medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics by just 0.43 seconds from Australia. Therefore, the crew was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. The crew also won bronze at the 1978 World Championships, silver in 1979 and 1982, and a second gold medal in 1983, beating East Germany for the first time ever.
Nationally, Hedderich won four titles with Dürsch in the double sculls. From 1977-85 he also won the quadruple sculls title. By profession, Hedderich became a tube installer.
