Hans-Wolfgang Heidland

Rower Hans-Wolfgang Heidland was a member of the German coxed eights that was eliminated in the repêchage at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games. He was the 1933 coxless fours German Champion with Mannheimer Ruderverein Amicitia 1876.

He studied theology, and after finishing his doctorate, became pastor in Mannheim before becoming and Army chaplain during World War II. In 1946 he became head of the Men’s Work of the Church in Baden. From 1964 to his retirement in October 1980, he was bishop of the Evangelical Church in Baden. Previously, he was appointed to the Oberkirchenrat in Heidelberg from 1949-60. Also a Protestant student’s residence in Karlsruhe was named after him.
