Mark Kleinschmidt was a German rower with the eights at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics that put up a strong fight against the Netherlands in the final, winning the silver medal. Therefore, the whole crew was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. In 1993, Kleinschmidt won a bronze medal with the coxed fours at the World Championships. Domestically, he won national titles with the coxed fours, and eights, in 1995-97 and 1999.
