Rower Jens Köppen was a member of the East German quadruple sculls that won the bronze medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. The crew also won the national title that same year. From 1985-89, Köppen was also a member of national title-winning crews. Köppen retired in 1989 but was came out of retirement for the 1992 Barcelona Games as a reserve. When Peter Uhrig fell ill after the heats, Köppen joined Christian Händle in the double sculls and finished ninth.
Köppen later married teammate Kathrin Boron, but later divorced. He became a graduated finance and tax consultant, and ran his own consultancy at Potsdam.
