Walter Volle won a gold medal with the coxed fours at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The same year this boat won the German Championships. In 1937 and 1938 Volle was German Champion with the coxed eights and in 1937 he was a member of the eights team that finished second in the European Championships. In 1942 and 1947 he was the German coxless fours champion.
After retiring from his active career in 1958, he became head coach of the Berlin Rowing Club. The athletes he coached won 11 German titles in various classes. At the first World Rowing Championships at Lucerne in 1962, his pupils won the coxed fours title and they repeated the feat in the European Championships at København (Copenhagen) the following year. In 1964 he coached the gold medal-winning coxed fours boat at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.
