Gyula Halmay started rowing for the BEAC as a student at Péter Pázmány University. Already as the member of Hungary’s coxed four, he won the national championships two times (1934, 1936). In 1935, as a member of the eights, he won the College World Games. In 1936, he participated in the Berlin Olympics with the coxless four, where they failed to reach the final. After the Berlin Olympics he stopped rowing due to his official duties as the treasurer of the Diocese of Vác.
He did not want to break up with sports for good, going on to establish a sports camp that met all modern needs. He decided to put his knowledge in the field of sports at the service of the youth of Vác. In addition, he acted as Vice-President of Hungária EE until 1948, when the association was dissolved.
He left Hungary in 1950 and settled in Canada.
