István Jeney competed as an athlete for the Hungária EE. Early in his career he competed in single sculls, but his most significant success was achieved with the famous Hungarian eight that finished seventh at the 1912 Olympics. After finishing his sports career, Jeney worked for the board of the Hungarian Rowing Association.
