Sándor Ormándi’s first sports were football and athletics, before switching to rowing in 1942 at Hitelbank SE, after working at Hitelbank since 1939. He first competed in the eight, then switched to sculls, where he mostly competed in the single sculls. After the Second World War, he continued with Hitelbank until 1948, before competing for MTE in 1948–1949, and in 1949–1954 for Bp. Vörös Meteor. He won four senior championships, all in the double sculls.
Between 1947 and 1950 he appeared in the Hungarian national team, mostly in double sculls. At the 1947 European Championships in Lucerne he achieved an excellent fourth place. In 1948, together with József Simó, he won the event at the Balkan Games. This earned them selection for the Olympics as well, where they did not reach the final. In 1949 he finished in first place at the College World Championship held in Budapest.
In 1954 he became a coach, eventually obtaining his coaching qualifications in 1962 at the Sports Management and Coaching Institute. In the 1950s he worked at Budapesti Ásványőrlő Vállalat, and a decade later at Chemokomplex as an audito. In the first half of the 1970s he was an employee of Hungexpo in the financial field.
