Biography

.József Simó was introduced to rowing in 1946, but he only started training seriously at the beginning of 1948 in the colors of Ganz Hajó, and immediately found himself in the squad preparing for the Olympics. In 1948, along with Sándor Ormándi, he competed in the double sculls at the London Olympics, where they finished in third place in both the preliminaries and the repêchage, but did not make it to the finals. After the Olympics he competed in single sculls, wininng the Hungarian championship and the College World Championship title in Budapest in 1949, in addition to participating in the European championship in Amsterdam.

In 1950 he competed in the colors of Bp. Honvéd. In the same year, with Gyula Andrási, an Olympic kayaker, he suffered a fatal sailing accident on Lake Balaton under unclear circumstances. In 1951-1952 the József Simó memorial competition was organized in his honor.
