Kerry Ashby started in rowing at Mt. Albert Grammar School from 1943-46, where he became captain of the rowing team. At the club level he represented West End Rowing Club, winning national titles in the eights five times (1949, 1951-53, 1963), also winning a coxed fours title in 1953 and a double sculls national title in 1956. Ashby won two silver medals at the British Empire (later Commonwealth) Games, in the 1950 coxed eights and the 1954 coxed fours. He became active in sports administration in rowing, becoming a life member and President of the New Zealand Rowing Association and a life member of West End. He coached the Mt. Albert rowing team from 1966-78 and in 1976 was manager of the New Zealand rowing team at the Montréal Olympics.
