During the 1980s Romanian rower Mihaela Armășescu won multiple medals at both the World Championships and the Olympics. In 1982 Armășescu was part of the coxed four crew that won bronze at the World Championships in Lucerne. This earned her a place on the Olympic team where she moved to the eight for the Los Angeles Games. In a small field of just six teams, Romania was just beaten into second place, finishing a behind the US team that took gold.
Armășescu won further medals at the World Championships, with bronze in the eight in both 1985 and 1986, before returning to the Olympics in 1988. At the Games in Seoul, she replicated her success from Los Angeles, winning another silver in the eight, along with a bronze in the coxed fours. Arguably her biggest win came a year later at the World Championships when she was part of the crew that took home gold in the eight, as well as winning bronze in the coxless fours.
