“Pa” Kelleher went to the 1924 Olympics with a run of 10 consecutive wins by knockout to his credit leading up to the Games. He also went to Paris as the reigning Army and Irish lightweight champion. Unfortunately, he was knocked out in his only bout at the Olympics when he lost to the American Ben Rothwell after being stopped in the second round.
Kelleher used to box with with a sleep compeller in each glove to help him relax in the ring – not much chance of that with a guy in front of him constantly pounding his head! Like the other two Cork boxers who fought at the 1924 Games, Mossy Doyle and Boy Murphy, Kelleher served in the Irish National Army.
