Kevin Martin

After winning a couple of juvenile boxing titles, Kevin Martin won the senior Dublin featherweight title in 1946. A reserve for the Ireland team in the international match against Wales in March 1948, he made his full début against Spain shortly afterwards. Martin was selected for the featherweight division at the London Olympics, where he pushed the eventual gold medallist Ernesto Formenti of Italy all the way before losing on points in their second-round contest. Shortly after the Games, Martin took part in the dual international against the USA.

Four years later, Martin lost in the 1952 Irish national lightweight final to Tony Byrne on points but beat him in the final Olympic trial to earn his place on the team for his second Olympics, at Helsinki. Martin was again eliminated in the second-round, by the Romanian Gheorghe Fiat. A butcher by trade, Martin died while visiting family in Australia in 1983. He was just 57-years-of-age at the time.
