Tommy Reddy

Boxer Tommy Reddy competed in the featherweight division at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. The referee stopped his opening bout in the second round, however, after the Yugoslav Stevan Redli had put the Irishman on the canvas three times. Reddy and his younger brother Ando made history as the first brothers to box for Ireland at the same Olympics.

Having won the 1949 junior Irish bantamweight title, Reddy beat Willie Lenihan on points to win the senior title that year, when he also made his international début against Belgium at Dublin. Reddy made his final appearance for Ireland against Italy in 1957, having three-times competed at European Amateur Championships. Beaten by 17-year-old Harry Perry in the featherweight final at the 1952 Irish Championships, Reddy eventually won his second, and last, national title when beating Tommy Maxwell on points in the 1957 final. Reddy continued boxing until 1961.
