James Beggs served in the US Army in World War II, both in North Africa and Europe. He then earned an undergraduate degree from Yale, before getting a masters’ degree at Stanford in 1951, and then a PhD in psychology in 1967 from the University of Oregon. At Stanford Beggs served as crew coach for several years. He settled in the Bay Area and was a psychology professor at San Jose State University, where he was twice department chairman and once division head, before retiring in 1992.
