Gene Clapp began rowing at summer camp when he was only 12 years old. He later rowed for Penn, helping their eight to the 1972 IRA championship, and the 1969 freshman intercollegiate title. His biggest title came in the 1971 World Championships when he was on the U.S. eight that captured the championship. Clapp was also accomplished in smaller boats, helping win the 1971 American Henley and national title in the fours. In the Olympic year, he was the captain of the Penn crew team.
