At Oliver Ames, he ran cross-country and track, and was the valedictorian of his class, scoring a perfect 800 in his math SATs. Everett started rowing at MIT, helping them to three straight (1973-75) second place finishes at the IRAs (Intercollegiate Rowing Association). Everett raced at the 1976 Olympics in the eight, and also made the 1980 Olympic team that did not compete. He won a gold medal at the 1975 Pan American Games in the eight. Everett raced at six World Championships, winning a gold in the eights in 1974, a silver in the coxed fours in 1981 and adding a bronze in the coxed fours in 1982.
Everett would earn a masters’ degree from Stanford and then returned to MIT for his PhD in civil engineering. He became a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Michigan. For over 30 years, Everett has continued to race at the Head of the Charles Regatta (Charles River, Boston) with Team 1980, the 1980 rowing eight that could not compete at Moskva. He is a member of the National Rowing Foundation Hall of Fame.
