Gus Goetz rowed the coxed pair at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. He was encouraged and mentored as a rower by Philadelphia legend Jack Kelly, Sr.. Goetz represented the Penn Athletic Club. While competing as a rower, Goetz also worked a summer job as a lifeguard at Ocean City, New Jersey. Goetz attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied engineering. He later became a lawyer.
