Biography

Joseph Toland rowed at La Salle High School in Philadelphia, at St. Joseph’s University, and with the Vesper Boat Club. He won multiple national championships with Vesper in almost every boat, except singles. In addition to his Olympic appearance, he won two medals at the 1955 Pan American Games, a gold in coxed fours, and a silver in the eights. Toland later coached rowing at St. Joseph’s from 1960-73, helping them win the 1970 Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River. He worked for over 30 years with Johnson Controls International in Philadelphia, becoming the Mid-Atlantic Region vice-president in the late 1980s, and retiring in 1998 as branch general manager.
