Jim Ellis competed in trap shooting for Australia at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. He started out in sports in Australian league football and cricket but injuries limited his success in those sports and he turned to sport shooting.
Ellis competed at his first national championships in 1970, winning four Australian titles that year. He would eventually win nine national championships, 10 New South Wales state titles, and qualify for nine Mackintosh teams. He also garnered five Australia ISSF Championships, 11 Australia ISSF Team High Guns, an Australian Skeet Championships, and a New Zealand Ball Trap Championship.
Ellis was a three-time medalist at the trap shooting World Championships and won a gold medal in pairs trap shooting at the 1982 Commonwealth Games. He was inducted into the ACTA National Hall of Fame in 2006 and was a life member of the Canberra International Clay Target Club.
