Three shooters tied for first with 192 – the defending gold medalist, Luciano Giovannetti (ITA); Francisco Boza (PER), and Daniel Carlisle (USA). In the shoot-off, nobody went clean but Giovannetti missed only one clay to win the gold medal, Boza posting a 23 and Carlisle a 22. Giovannetti became the first trap shooter to defend a gold medal at the Olympics. Carlisle would later switch to skeet and win a bronze medal in that event at at the 1988 Olympics.
