After her career as an athlete, Bauer devoted herself to the field of nutrition. She married and studied nutritional sciences in Vienna. At the age of 40, Karin Bauer, now Karin Buchart, wrote her dissertation on Traditional Biogenic Medicines in Pinzgau, deepening her interest. She interviewed old farmers’ wives in the Salzburg Saalachtal and recorded the traditional knowledge. UNESCO approached her and declared the Salzburg knowledge an intangible world cultural heritage. Bauer (-Buchart) then became a medicinal plant expert and renowned author of numerous books on medicinal plants, natural pharmacy, and intestinal health, and worked as a freelance columnist.
